# 12 Book – San Diego’s Navy – Coffee table book by Bruce Linder, published 2001, and details the illustrated history of our U.S. Navy’s interest in San Diego from 1846 to 2000. Moments of triumph and tragedy as San Diego grew into a vital Navy Fleet HQ and home port for USS Frank Knox. Donated by Steve Cross, 619-992-9449. Opening Bid $ 45 |
# 13 Book – The World in the Air – Francis T. Miller, published 1930, and contains hundreds of photos of aviation milestones across the globe. The photos of aviation pioneers like Wilber and Orville Wright, Glen Curtis, Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindberg were all signed before printing. I found a record of a friend’s grandfather, Earl Freeman Johnson, one of the Navy’s flying Lieutenants 1912. His photo is on page 250 before participating in a record-breaking cross Pacific flight. #15 The Knox lighter in the lower right corner of the photo with the lettering only is not a zippo. The Knox lighter with the ship includes the box above it. I asked Bill to review the photos and here's his response: "Harry: These are nice lighters....The two Knox lighters are especially nice...the one with the ship on it is the best....the other with just the engravings on it, is not as much except that it is a Zippo. There are lots of Zippo Lighter collectors. The others are fine, especially the Diego Garcia one....that is a high security base on a little island in the Indian Ocean....we visited the island in 1964 on the First Concord Expedition. One is a submarine....hard to find and the USS Coontz is special because we traveled with the Coontz to Australia/New Zealand in 1968."
